The internet existed for decades as a closed network for academics and the military. It was a powerful tool, but its complexity made it inaccessible to the average person. The key figure behind this revolution was Tim Berners-Lee, a software engineer at CERN. He recognized a major problem: the vast amount of information at the research center was disorganized and hard to share. Scientists had to navigate different computer systems and file formats, making collaboration a frustrating and inefficient process.
To solve this, he envisioned a system of interconnected documents linked by hyperlinks. His goal was to create a “universal linked information system” that would be open and easy to use. He wrote a proposal in 1989, but it initially failed to gain traction. Undeterred, he began to build the tools needed to make his vision a reality.
Berners-Lee invented the three fundamental pillars of the web: HTML, HTTP, and URLs. These technologies allowed for the creation of web pages, a protocol to transfer them, and a unique address to locate them. This elegant and simple design was the blueprint for a new era of information sharing.
The first web server went live on Berners-Lee’s NeXT computer at CERN. He created the first web browser and the first web page, which explained what the World Wide Web was. The web was functional, but at this point, it was still a small, private network of a few users at CERN.
The true turning point came on April 30, 1993. On this day, CERN released the web technology into the public domain, free of charge. This was a monumental decision. Instead of patenting the technology and profiting from it, CERN and Berners-Lee made it open and accessible to everyone. This was the moment of The Digital Big Bang.
